Do Christmas Lights Use a Lot of Electricity? Fine Once, Not All Season

Christmas lights do not use a lot of electricity as a single LED mini string on a single night. They do when an incandescent C9 display is left on for the season. Christmas Lights, Etc lists a Wintergreen Lighting 70-count 5mm wide-angle LED string at about 4.8 watts; six hours at the U.S. Energy Information Administration's June 2026 residential average of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour costs about half a cent. A Home Accents Holiday 25-light incandescent C9 string is rated 175 watts on the instruction sheet. Ten of those strings, six hours a night through the 31 days of December, cost about $60 and draw 1,750 watts, above the 1,440-watt continuous-load allowance on a 15-amp, 120-volt branch circuit.

Hospital emergency lighting is not signed off from a remembered walk. The sheet has a date after the walk. A holiday circuit judged on opening night is the same miss. Midwinter evenings run long when the day never fully opens. The watts at dusk on night one are still the watts at 11 p.m. on night 31.

Christmas Lights, Etc, in the power guide updated 28 January 2026 by Eric Allen, puts a 100-count incandescent mini string at 40 watts and a 70-count 5mm wide-angle LED string at about 4.8 watts. The Home Depot listing for Home Accents Holiday model TOL-100L/2WB-C states 40.8 watts and a maximum of five sets connected. Those two mini-incandescent figures disagree by 0.8 watts. Cost math below uses 40.8 watts for that Home Accents set.

A Lowe's instruction sheet for a 25-count incandescent C9 string, model W11C0154, rates the set at 175 watts (1.46 amps at 120 volts) and requires 7-watt-max intermediate-base C9 lamps. Home Accents Holiday's 843542 25-light multi C9 manual states the same 7-watt-max lamp, the same 1.46-amp example, and the same 175-watt rating.

Rhett Allain, associate professor of physics at Southeastern Louisiana University, reported in WIRED on 24 December 2017 a measured 20.0 watts on a 100-light incandescent mini string and 2.4 watts on a 50-light LED string. That 20.0-watt reading is about half the 40.8-watt nameplate.

Six hours is the nightly figure EnergySage used in Kristina Zagame's 15 December 2025 calculator. At 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour, one Wintergreen LED string costs about $0.005, one Home Accents mini incandescent about $0.045, and one Home Accents C9 about $0.193. One night of one C9 string is still under 20 cents.

What does a 10-string display cost if it stays on all December?

Christmas Lights, Etc treats about 10 strings as a typical outdoor display.

EnergySage ran its table at six hours per day for all 31 days of December. Christmas Lights, Etc's calculator multiplies by five hours and 30 days. Daniel Wood and Sarah Gerrity, then in the Department of Energy's Office of Public Affairs, costed a six-foot tree at 12 hours a day for 40 days in a 16 December 2015 explainer. The figures below follow EnergySage's six hours and 31 days.

Ten Wintergreen 4.8-watt LED strings draw 48 watts: 8.93 kilowatt-hours over those 31 nights, $1.64 at 18.34 cents. Ten Home Accents 40.8-watt mini incandescent strings draw 408 watts, 75.9 kilowatt-hours, $13.92. Ten Home Accents 175-watt C9 strings draw 1,750 watts, 325.5 kilowatt-hours, $59.70.

A 300-foot C9 roofline at 12-inch spacing is 300 bulbs, 12 strings of 25. Christmas Lights, Etc puts that run at 2,100 watts incandescent, matching 7 watts times 300 lamps. The same hours cost 390.6 kilowatt-hours, $71.64.

Christmas Lights, Etc still prices the math at 11.3 cents per kilowatt-hour, attributed to EnergyStar.gov. EIA's Electric Power Monthly, data for June 2026 released 26 August 2026, puts the national residential average at 18.34 cents. EnergySage used $0.18 from EIA as of September 2025. The 11.3-cent figure is stale. EIA's June 2026 statewide map put California at 28.50 cents per kilowatt-hour and New Mexico at 8.96 cents.

How do LED mini strings compare with incandescent C7 and C9 sets?

Christmas Lights, Etc plans C7 and C9 rooflines as one class: 25 bulbs per string, two incandescent strings end-to-end. The named wattage on the Home Accents C9 sheet is 7 watts per lamp and 175 watts per string. Heritage Lighting's installer pamphlet lists both C7 and C9 incandescent bulbs at 7.0 watts; some consumer tables put C7 at 5 watts.

Wintergreen Lighting's OptiCore C9 spec sheet rates the LED replacement at 0.8 watts per bulb, 20 watts per 25-light set. Christmas Lights, Etc also publishes 29 watts for 300 LED C9 bulbs on a cheaper prelamped class. EnergySage's table gives 480 watts for 500 feet of LED C9, about 0.96 watts per lamp.

ENERGY STAR's decorative-light-strings product page states that certified strings consume 92 percent less energy than conventional incandescent strands, with a Version 1.5 cap of 0.20 watts per lamp. The ENERGY STAR gift-guide page says about 70 percent less. Wood and Gerrity wrote that LED holiday strands "consume 70 percent less energy than conventional incandescent light strands" and, next, that a six-foot tree lit 12 hours a day for 40 days "costs $0.27" with LEDs "compared to $10 for incandescent lights." Those dollars are a 97 percent cut in the same article. Christmas Lights, Etc states 80 to 90 percent less.

Per lamp, the Wintergreen 4.8-watt mini uses 17 percent of the Home Accents 0.408-watt incandescent mini. The 0.8-watt OptiCore C9 uses 11 percent of the 7-watt incandescent C9. The 29-watt prelamped LED C9 run against 2,100 watts incandescent is a 99 percent cut. The tag on the box is the number for the worksheet.

How is the seasonal cost calculated from the UL tag?

EnergySage and Christmas Lights, Etc publish the same arithmetic.

  1. Read the wattage on the flag-type tag within six inches of the plug. If only amps are printed, the Home Accents C9 sheet's method is amps times 120 volts: 1.46 × 120 = 175 watts.
  2. Multiply by the number of strings on that run.
  3. Convert to kilowatt-hours: watts × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000. EnergySage's published clock is 6 × 31.
  4. Multiply kilowatt-hours by the residential rate on the latest bill, or by EIA's June 2026 national residential average of 18.34 cents.
  5. Divide total watts by 120 to get amps. On a 15-amp breaker, National Electrical Code 210.20(A) holds a continuous load—three hours or more, Article 100—at 12 amps, 1,440 watts.

How many Christmas lights can a 15-amp circuit carry, and how many strings may connect end to end?

Most dwelling receptacle circuits are 15 or 20 amps at 120 volts. Christmas Lights, Etc states both ratings, 1,800 watts on 15 amps and 2,400 watts on 20 amps, then applies the 80 percent continuous-load cut to 1,440 and 1,920 watts.

Ten Home Accents C9 strings at 1,750 watts are 14.6 amps: under a 15-amp trip, over the 12-amp continuous allowance. Twelve C9 strings at 2,100 watts are 17.5 amps and trip a 15-amp breaker. Ten Wintergreen 4.8-watt LED minis are 48 watts, 0.40 amps. Ten Home Accents 40.8-watt minis are 408 watts, 3.4 amps. Both fit. The C9 roof does not.

The string limit is a second ceiling. Christmas Lights, Etc, following UL 588 practice for seasonal products, states a maximum of 210 watts connected on 22-gauge wire and 420 watts on 20-gauge wire. The Home Accents C9 sheet allows 432 watts, 3.6 amps, end to end. Two 175-watt C9 strings are 350 watts, under both numbers. Three would be 525 watts, over both.

Wintergreen's 5mm LED listing allows 45 sets or 216 watts. The Home Accents mini listing allows five sets. Wintergreen's OptiCore C9 commercial stringer, 18-gauge, allows 960 watts, about 1,200 bulbs at 0.8 watts. Christmas Lights, Etc's cheaper LED C9 example allows 87 strings.

NEC 210.8 requires GFCI protection on outdoor receptacles. NEC 590.5 requires listed decorative lighting. NEC 590.3(B) limits temporary decorative lighting to 90 days.

When does a display that is fine for one night become a fire load?

The National Fire Protection Association's winter-holiday research, 2020–2024 annual averages, reports 835 home structure fires a year that began with decorations, excluding Christmas trees, with 3 civilian deaths, 29 civilian injuries, and $18 million in direct property damage. Nearly half of those fires started because decorations were too close to a heat source. Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 40 percent of home Christmas-tree fires.

Allain's 2017 infrared frames showed the incandescent mini string hot and the LED string cool. ENERGY STAR and the Department of Energy both describe LED holiday strings as cool to the touch. Incandescent C9 glass at 7 watts still earns the "do not touch" warning on the box.

A 1,750-watt C9 load on a 15-amp circuit is the electrical version of signing the monthly sheet from memory. It can hold for a night. Write the watts, the string count, the hours, and the breaker number before the display goes up. Test the GFCI. Set the timer. Leave the C9 roof on a second circuit, or replace it with OptiCore 0.8-watt lamps.

One 4.8-watt LED string for one night is fine. Ten 175-watt C9 strings for 31 nights on one 15-amp circuit is the load the tag already described.
